Endometriosis is an inflammatory disease characterized by the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity. This condition affects approximately 10% of women of reproductive age worldwide, and common symptoms usually include severe and painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea), pelvic floor pain, and in many cases, difficulties with conception. In a previous article, we discussed the diagnosis, symptoms, and common myths associated with endometriosis.
Today, we will look at the importance of diet and specific micronutrients that can significantly alleviate the course of endometriosis.
Endometriosis remains somewhat misunderstood, and even after years of research, it is not entirely clear what we should blame most for its development. Several different factors contribute to the development of endometriosis, including:
- Impaired immune system that cannot remove misplaced endometrial tissue
- Chronic systemic inflammation arising from immune system dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, and an unhealthy lifestyle
- Hormonal imbalance affecting fertility, symptoms, and inflammatory response
If you have endometriosis, lifestyle and proper diet selection are the first successful steps to returning to an asymptomatic period, also known as remission.
What should your plate look like for health?
Ensure that the foundation of your plate consists of natural foods, plenty of vegetables and fruits, healthy fats, and all other macronutrients.
The state of your gut is closely related to the body's defense capabilities, inflammatory response, and hormone levels and metabolism. (1,2) Billions of bacteria live in our gut; some are beneficial, others are mostly harmful when dominant. An imbalance of bacteria or otherwise disturbed gut environment will have a direct impact on other systems in the body. Therefore, focus on sufficient consumption of fermented foods, such as milk kefir, yogurt, or kimchi, sauerkraut, or other fermented vegetables. Sufficient fiber, healthy sleep, and stress reduction also significantly support the gut microbiome.
An imbalance of reproductive hormones worsens symptoms of endometriosis, such as severe pain and PMS symptoms. However, excess estrogen also directly affects inflammation levels, which remains a key feature of the disease. Therefore, ensure an adequate intake of food and all macronutrients, eat regularly throughout the day, and do not skip meals or replace them with coffee. All these factors can throw hormones out of whack and only exacerbate endometriosis.
A nutritious diet full of vitamins and minerals should be part of everyone's diet. Especially in the case of endometriosis, however, some nutrients are more important than others. Either because patients with endometriosis have been found to have significantly lower levels of these substances, or because their body requires increased amounts due to inflammation or chronic stress.
Let's look at which nutrients can be absolutely key if you live with endometriosis:
Vitamin E
Vitamin E belongs to the group of fat-soluble vitamins. It is naturally found, for example, in vegetable oils (especially olive and avocado), nuts, seeds, and some types of fruits and vegetables.
It is a significant antioxidant, so it reduces oxidative stress and inflammatory markers in the body. This can improve chronic pelvic pain and severe and painful menstruation during the menstrual cycle. Not only is sufficient vitamin E crucial for inflammation control, but studies also show that patients with endometriosis have lower levels of vitamin E than other women. (3)
Magnesium
Magnesium performs many essential bodily functions. It strengthens the body's defenses, maintains healthy bones and a steady heart rate, improves the body's resistance to stress, supports the normal function of the nervous system, and maintains stable blood sugar levels. (4)
Specifically, increased glucose levels and significant fluctuations trigger an inflammatory response. Because endometriosis is a disease based on chronic inflammation, blood sugar dysregulation can promote endometrial growth and exacerbate the condition. (5) The increase in inflammation and the resulting imbalance of other hormones stemming from blood sugar imbalance can contribute to worsening pain during menstruation and throughout the cycle. (6)
Sufficient magnesium in the diet or as a supplement is almost a necessity for every woman, especially for those with hormonal imbalance or endometriosis directly.
B vitamins
B vitamins, of which there are generally 8, are involved in the breakdown of macronutrients, the conversion and production of energy from food, the proper functioning of the nervous system, or the production of DNA and RNA, our genetic material.
Specifically, vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, plays a key role in hormonal health. An imbalance between estrogen and progesterone significantly complicates the course of endometriosis and is usually responsible for unpleasant manifestations in the second part of the cycle. (7) Vitamin B6, on the other hand, promotes progesterone production, thereby helping to balance hormones. In addition, it takes care of your calm and undisturbed sleep, strengthens the immune response, and last but not least, reduces chronic inflammation. (8)
Vitamin B6 also supports the function of the nervous system, which plays a significant role in the course of endometriosis, but also in the overall health of the menstrual cycle of all women. (9,10,11)
Zinc
Zinc belongs to the group of minerals and is found in some foods such as oysters, crabs, red meat, poultry, dairy products, and in smaller amounts in beans or nuts.
Zinc supports the body's natural defenses, has anti-inflammatory properties, reduces oxidative stress and the production of free radicals, and supports an appropriate stress response in the body. (12)
Among its other useful properties are support for ovulation and fertility, maintaining proper hormone levels, and regulating the menstrual cycle. Women with endometriosis have low zinc levels according to studies, so increased intake can have positive effects on the entire body. (13)
Indole-3-carbinol
Indole-3-carbinol is a substance naturally occurring in cruciferous vegetables such as horseradish, kale, cabbage, and broccoli. In the body, it supports liver detoxification processes and normal cellular production. It increases hormone metabolism and helps optimize their levels. Among other things, it also supports the immune system.
For endometriosis, it is particularly important due to its effect on immunity and improved estrogen detoxification. Estrogen dominance is often a driving force behind endometriosis in some women, and sufficient intake of this substance helps alleviate bleeding, pain, inflammation, and other related symptoms. (14)
All the above-mentioned nutrients can be found in the Endo Complex, which by its composition supplements the necessary nutrients for overall female health and especially for women with endometriosis.
Vitamin D
Another fat-soluble vitamin is vitamin D. It is closely linked to immune system function, and there is increasing research confirming the link between a deficiency of this nutrient and the development and course of autoimmune diseases and conditions.
Vitamin D regulates the inflammatory response, supports immune functions, and participates in maintaining hormonal balance. (15)
It is naturally found in fatty fish (salmon, tuna, and mackerel), liver, egg yolk, or some dairy products, and its most significant source is sunlight.
Not only women with endometriosis, but most residents of temperate zones can therefore observe the manifestations of low vitamin D levels especially during the winter months.
If you decide to supplement vitamin D, choose its biologically active form, which is more easily absorbed in the body.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have endometriosis?
Endometriosis manifests as severe painful menstruation, pain during intercourse, fatigue, and digestive problems. The only way to definitively confirm it is through laparoscopy. If the symptoms limit you in daily life, consult a gynecologist.
How long does it take to get a diagnosis?
The average time from the first symptoms to a diagnosis of endometriosis in the Czech Republic is 7–10 years. Many women are long dismissed with the notion that painful menstruation is normal.
Can endometriosis be treated naturally?
Endometriosis cannot be completely cured, but symptoms can be naturally alleviated with an anti-inflammatory diet, supplements, exercise, and stress reduction. Natural support does not replace medical care but can significantly improve quality of life.
Are organic menstrual products better for women with endometriosis?
Yes. Conventional tampons and pads may contain pesticides and chemicals that irritate sensitive tissue. Femvie's organic cotton products are certified and free of harmful substances.
