10 things I wish I knew before my first period

Do you still remember your first period? Maybe you are one of those women for whom it was not exactly the most pleasant experience in life. So many questions that you will only get answers to over the years and experience. Therefore, together with our Instagram followers, we have put together 10 things we wish we knew before our first period came.

Menstruation shouldn't hurt and it can be solved.

Menstruation may not be comfortable and 100% pleasant, but pain should not automatically be a part of menstruation. If you experience it, start addressing it and find the cause of the pain, don't be put off by the fact that it's normal.

It's okay to have irregular periods during puberty.

In the first few years after your first period, your periods may be irregular as your body learns to work with its new system and reproductive hormones.

PS It can take up to 6 years for your cycle to completely stabilize after your first period. Be patient.

Accidents happen.

Sometimes you'll have some bleeding during your period. It just happens and it's okay.

Hormonal fluctuations are related to mood.

During your cycle, you may experience mood swings and emotions that you can't explain, typically before your period. This is due to hormones, which fluctuate throughout the month and play a large role in regulating your mood.

Menstruation does not have to occur exactly every 28 days.

That's right, neither after 28 days nor after a month to the exact day. Menstrual cycles should range from 21-35 days, but in the first months to years of menstruation they can be extended up to 45 days.

Menstruation can come in many colors.

In addition to the typical deep red color, you can also expect to see brown or black blood during your period, which may be worrisome. The color depends on how heavy your period is or how long the blood has been exposed to oxygen on the pad.

Sometimes more than just blood comes out. And you can feel it.

When your period is heavier, you may notice blood clots , especially when using a sanitary napkin. And yes, you may feel it and it may surprise you. But it's not necessarily a cause for concern.

The choice of menstrual aids is up to you.

It's up to you whether you prefer pads , tampons , a cup or panties. The right device is the one that suits you.

You can swim during your period!

You can safely go swimming during your period and there's nothing unhygienic about it. If you're using a tampon or menstrual cup, it's unlikely that blood will get into the water while swimming.

You don't have to be ashamed of having your period.

Menstruation is a natural part of a woman's body and there's no reason it should always be taboo. It affects us almost on a daily basis, it can interfere with our studies, work or social life. We don't have to pretend it doesn't exist.

And what advice would you give?
