A new study led by the University of California, Berkeley and published in the journal Environmental International evaluated levels of 16 metals in 30 tampons from 14 brands sold across the U.S. (79%) and Europe (21%). The study found measurable concentrations of heavy metals in the tampons, including lead, arsenic, and cadmium.
It is important to emphasize that the test samples were found at very low concentrations. This could be explained by the use of extremely low detection limits (MDLs) in the testing, and as the researchers suggest, the metals detected could be present as a result of systemic environmental contamination.
The US researchers also noted that further research is needed, as the test samples were very small and it is not yet possible to assess to what extent (or if at all) the metals at these concentrations could be absorbed into the body and contribute to any health problems.
However, we recognize that this study has raised concerns about tampon use, and we want to inform, reassure, and answer any questions our customers may have. At Femvie, we welcome any new scientific publication that evaluates the safety of menstrual products. Honesty and transparency are very important to us, which is why we always share all information about the ingredients and origins of our products - and today will be no different.
Are Femvie tampons safe?
Intimate hygiene manufacturers are not required to disclose their exact ingredients, as is the case with food and cosmetics. That’s why it’s important to be extra careful when choosing tampons and pads. Our organic cotton tampons are certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), the world’s leading textile processing standard that sets the bar for organic brands across industries.
Independent third parties thoroughly test the entire supply chain before it is subjected to a GOTS audit, which means that even the purest organic cotton fibers are tested for heavy metals. GOTS sets limits for safe, low concentrations of these heavy metals and we are pleased to announce that Femvie meets these limits.
The GOTS certificate guarantees:
- compliance with strict ethical requirements throughout the entire production process
- strict control of organic cotton cultivation and every step from the cotton field to the final product
- that the products do not contain traces of GMOs, pesticides, heavy metals or other substances harmful to health
- regular laboratory tests proving the absence of the above-mentioned substances
At the same time, FEMVIE tampons are regularly tested by the leading German independent testing agency Öko-Test and meet all strict criteria.
The study also suggests that antimicrobial agents , which are often used in the manufacturing of intimate products, may be a possible source of metals. We can confirm that none of these substances are added to our tampons during the manufacturing process.
What are Femvie tampons made of?
Unlike regular tampons available in drugstores, which may be exposed to pesticides or chlorine bleach during production, may be perfumed and contain plastics and synthetic additives, Femvie tampons are made from 100% certified organic cotton . Nothing more. And our pads are no different. Pads are still the most popular form of menstrual protection. Femvie pads, like tampons, are made from 100% organic cotton, ensuring maximum comfort and protection.

100% safety, 100% comfort
Our pads and tampons are 100% safe for women's health. However, pure cotton has many other advantages. Since they contain no synthetic substances or artificial dyes other than cotton, they are perfectly breathable, comfortable and suitable for even the most sensitive skin .
