A new study led by the University of California, Berkeley, and published in Environmental International evaluated the levels of 16 metals in 30 tampons from 14 brands sold across the USA (79%) and Europe (21%). The study found measurable concentrations of heavy metals in tampons, including lead, arsenic, and cadmium.
It is essential to emphasize that the test samples were found in truly low concentrations. This could be explained by the use of extremely low detection limits (MDLs) during testing, and as researchers suggest, the detected metals could be present due to systemic environmental pollution.
American researchers also mentioned that further research would be needed. The test samples were very small, and it is not yet possible to assess the extent to which (and if at all) metals at these concentrations could be absorbed into the body and contribute to any health problems.
