Sex during menstruation: benefits and risks

Sex during menstruation: benefits and risks

If you're on your period, it doesn't mean you have to give up all intimate moments with your partner for a week. On the contrary, sex during menstruation can bring many benefits for your body and health. It's up to you and your partner how you approach it. Let's answer a few important questions you might have about intimacy during your period.

Can I have sex during my period?

Yes, you can. Although it can be a sensitive topic for some and they may not feel comfortable in such a situation, from a medical point of view, there is no reason to avoid sexual intercourse during menstruation. If you're concerned about potential mess due to menstrual blood, you can use a dark towel, prepare clean bedding in case of need, or enjoy intimate moments in the shower.

Are there any risks?

While not very likely, in some cases it is possible to get pregnant if you have sex during your period. (1) If you have unprotected sex towards the end of your menstrual period, male sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for several days. If you ovulate earlier in your cycle, there's a small chance of getting pregnant. The key is to know your cycle well and track your fertile days. If you want to avoid pregnancy, consider using contraception even during this period.

Another risk is the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). If there's a possibility of infection for you or your partner, use a condom or another barrier method of contraception even during menstruation.

Can sex during menstruation offer any benefits?

Yes, it can! During sexual intercourse, especially during orgasm, endorphins are released, which bind to receptors in the nervous system. (2) These can help relieve pain and cramps during menstruation, which often accompany the female cycle. (3)

Sex during menstruation can also increase libido, and menstrual blood can act as a natural lubricant.

Communication is key

If you're considering sex during menstruation, it's important to first listen to your body and ensure your comfort and safety. Key is also open communication with your partner, because what is pleasant and natural for one may be a sensitive topic for the other. Sharing your feelings and needs and respecting boundaries also strengthens mutual trust and positively affects your relationship.

Know your cycle

Tracking and regularly recording your cycle can provide you with information about your symptoms, predict the onset of your next period, and also determine the most fertile period of your cycle for pregnancy planning or as a form of natural contraception.

Everything you need to know about the menstrual cycle from A to Z, you will learn in our webinar Cycle Harmony. In the follow-up webinar Symptothermal Method in Practice, we will teach you how to effectively track and record all symptoms of your cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have endometriosis?

Endometriosis manifests as severe painful periods, pain during intercourse, fatigue, and digestive problems. The only way to definitively confirm it is through laparoscopy. If the symptoms limit your daily life, consult a gynecologist.

How long does it take to get a diagnosis?

The average time from the first symptoms to diagnosis of endometriosis in the Czech Republic is 7–10 years. Many women are long dismissed with the notion that painful periods are normal.

Can endometriosis be treated naturally?

Endometriosis cannot be completely cured, but symptoms can be naturally alleviated with an anti-inflammatory diet, supplements, exercise, and stress reduction. Natural support does not replace medical care but can significantly improve quality of life.

Are organic menstrual products better for women with endometriosis?

Yes. Conventional tampons and pads can contain pesticides and chemicals that irritate sensitive tissue. Femvie organic cotton products are certified and free from harmful substances.
