Can you also predict the arrival of your period with certainty a few days in advance? In this article, we bring you the most common premenstrual symptoms that may indicate that your period is probably just around the corner.
What is premenstrual syndrome (PMS)?
Premenstrual syndrome is a collection of physical and emotional symptoms that occur in the late luteal phase, approximately one week before menstruation . The cause of PMS is not fully known. Premenstrual symptoms may occur as a result of hormonal fluctuations in the second half of the cycle, but lifestyle and current psychological state also have a significant influence on the presence or worsening of symptoms.
5 signs that your period is coming soon
Pain and cramps
Dysmenorrhea, or menstrual pain, is one of the most common menstrual cycle-related complaints in women, affecting more than 50% of women worldwide. The cramps are primarily caused by inflammatory chemicals called prostaglandins that are released by the lining of the uterus, which can lead to contractions and pain leading up to and during menstruation. ( 1 ) However, dysmenorrhea is not just a term for cramping pain. Other associated symptoms include lower back or groin pain, fatigue and weakness, nausea, and headaches.

Increased fatigue
The menstrual cycle and fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels can impact sleep quality and overall energy . Research shows that up to 7 out of 10 women experience changes in their sleep patterns before their period, making premenstrual insomnia a relatively common symptom of PMS. ( 3 )
Change in cervical fluid
Cervical mucus changes throughout your cycle and helps sperm reach a mature egg during your fertile period. Just before your period, it can be sticky or even invisible. ( 4 )
