Pad Rash: What Causes It and How to Avoid It

Let's face it, menstruation itself is often quite challenging. Abdominal pain, fatigue, mood swings... and an unpleasant rash from pads are the last things we need during our days. You may be familiar with skin irritation, redness, itching or a feeling of constant discomfort. What could be behind it and how can you avoid the problems?

What can cause irritation?

There are several ways that menstrual pads can irritate the skin in the genital area:

Irritants in the composition

Many commercially available pads contain synthetic materials, artificial fragrances, or chemical bleaching residues. These substances are usually intended to improve the appearance, smell, or absorbency of the pad. However, they can do more harm than good when applied to sensitive intimate areas. Plastic additives, fragrances, or chlorine residues from the bleaching process can disrupt the natural pH of the vagina and lead to irritation or an unpleasant allergic reaction.

Added scents

Fragrances in pads are meant to mask the natural odor during menstruation, but they can cause a number of problems. The skin in the genital area is very sensitive, and perfumes, which are common not only in pads but also in other intimate hygiene products, can be harsh on it. The result can be itching, dryness, redness or disruption of the natural microbial balance.

Airtightness and long wear

Menstrual pads that aren't breathable enough can trap heat and moisture, creating an ideal environment for bacteria to grow. Plus, if you don't change your pads often enough, your skin stays in contact with moisture for a long time, which can contribute to rashes, itching, or even recurring yeast infections after your period.

Common synthetic materials absorb fluid well, but they also block airflow. That's why it's important to choose pads made from breathable natural materials and change them ideally every 3-4 hours, or more often depending on the intensity of bleeding.

Friction during movement

Irritation can also be caused by mechanical friction, such as when walking, running, or exercising. Pads with stiffer edges or synthetic fibers can rub against the skin, especially if you wear tight underwear or tight clothing. This makes the problem worse.

How to solve problems

If you are currently experiencing similar problems and symptoms, follow these steps:

  • Keep your intimate area clean and dry . Ideally, use clean water or gentle intimate wipes.

  • Use soothing ointments or creams that do not contain perfume or alcohol.

  • Choose breathable underwear made from natural materials and avoid synthetics that trap heat and moisture.

  • Change pads or tampons regularly, ideally every 3-4 hours, even if bleeding is light.

  • Monitor your skin's reactions . If irritation worsens or persists for more than a week, contact your doctor.
