Can I get pregnant from...? Myths, facts and what every woman should know about her cycle

Can I get pregnant from…?

There are many myths and half-truths circulating about how pregnancy occurs. Misinformation can unnecessarily cause fear of sex, misunderstanding of one's own body, and situations where unplanned pregnancy happens. Read an overview of what actually causes pregnancy and find out how to safely prevent it if necessary.

Can I get pregnant any time during my cycle?

No, you cannot. Conception occurs when sperm fertilizes an egg, and this is only possible during a short fertile window that lasts only a few days in each cycle. The highest probability of conception is during ovulation, which is the release of a mature egg from the ovary. This usually occurs approximately 13–15 days before the next menstruation.

However, it's important to realize that ovulation may not occur at the same time every cycle. It can shift due to stress, illness, changes in daily routine, or travel, for example. Therefore, fertile days can vary from cycle to cycle.

Can I get pregnant outside of ovulation?

Yes, it is possible to get pregnant outside of the actual day of ovulation, because the fertile window lasts several days; it is not just the moment the egg is released. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days. So, if you have intercourse several days before ovulation, sperm can literally "wait" for the egg and fertilize it when ovulation occurs.

The fertile window therefore includes approximately five days before ovulation, the day of ovulation itself, and the day after. The highest probability of conception is during ovulation and in the few days preceding it. Fertile days and ovulation can be recognized by several basic physical signs – more in this article.

However, pregnancy outside of ovulation in the sense of "outside the fertile window" is not possible, as the egg is only capable of being fertilized for a very short time.

Can I get pregnant from sex during menstruation?

It is possible, though less likely. Among the common myths about the cycle is the belief that unprotected sex during menstruation is completely safe. Although the risk of conception is lower, it cannot be completely ruled out – especially if you have a short or irregular menstrual cycle.

As mentioned, sperm can survive in the female reproductive system for a few days. Therefore, if unprotected intercourse occurs towards the end of menstruation and ovulation happens early, fertilization can occur. Moreover, bleeding doesn't always mean menstruation. Sometimes it's spotting associated with, for example, the release of an egg during ovulation.

Generally, sex during menstruation usually does not lead to pregnancy, but there is still a certain chance. It is therefore crucial to know the length of your cycle and your fertile days.

Can I get pregnant from anal sex?

You cannot get pregnant from anal sex itself, because sperm do not enter the vagina where fertilization could occur. However, there is a certain risk if ejaculate comes into contact with the vaginal opening, for example, if semen runs down from the anus or is transferred to the area around the vagina during intercourse. In such a situation, sperm could theoretically enter and fertilize an egg, although this possibility is highly unlikely.

It is important to remember that anal sex carries the risk of transmitting sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV, chlamydia, or gonorrhea. Therefore, it is recommended to use a condom even during anal intercourse.

Can I get pregnant from oral sex?

No, pregnancy is not possible during oral sex. Pregnancy only occurs when sperm enters the vagina and fertilizes an egg. During oral sex, sperm does not penetrate the female reproductive system at all. However, oral sex is not entirely without risk; it can still be a source of sexually transmitted infections, so it's advisable to be cautious.

Can I get pregnant if I don't have my period at all?

Yes, you can get pregnant even when you don't have your period. While menstruation is a sign of regular ovulation, its absence doesn't mean that ovulation or pregnancy cannot occur. For example, after childbirth, during breastfeeding, or with an irregular menstrual cycle, ovulation can happen even without a preceding menstruation. This means that an egg can be released and fertilized even if you haven't had your next period yet. Similarly, with certain health issues or hormonal fluctuations, menstruation might be absent, but ovulation still occurs. The absence of menstruation is therefore not reliable protection against pregnancy. If you do not wish to become pregnant, it is advisable to use contraception even when you do not have regular periods.

Can I get pregnant from sperm in water or on a toilet seat?

Sperm can survive for several days in the female reproductive tract, but once exposed to air, dryness, or water, they lose their ability to fertilize an egg. Therefore, if sperm were in water or on a toilet seat, for example, there is no need to worry about pregnancy. The risk in such a case is practically zero.
